Many UW–L services use Okta to allow for multifactor authentication. Second factors supported by Okta include smartphone apps and dedicated hardware devices. The YubiKey is one hardware device supported by both Linux and Okta. In fact, recent versions of Firefox on Linux support FIDO2, meaning that the browser can perform authentications by directly interacting with a YubiKey. There is no need for additional software.

Firefox 114.0 and newer support FIDO2. Perform the following steps to interact with UW–L Okta from Firefox:

  1. Visit https://myapps.uwlax.edu/.
  2. Perform an initial login using your NetID and password.
  3. The system will indicate that a setup is required. Select “security key or biometric authenticator”, and select “setup”.
  4. You might be familiar with how your browser asks for permission to use a computer's camera. Firefox will do the same, requesting extended information about your security key. Select “proceed”.
  5. The process might prompt you to setup an app- or phone-based authenticator. It is safe to select “setup later”.
  6. Provide your secondary email address as an alternative to your UW–L email address.

After step six, you should find yourself logged in at https://myapps.uwlax.edu/. This indicates your setup was successful.

Adding a second YubiKey is a matter of signing into https://myapps.uwlax.edu/ with the first, clicking your name at the top-right of the screen, selecting settings, and selecting “security methods: setup another security key or biometric authenticator”.
